“Well, we want to be free.” By Jack Applebaum
“Well, we want to be free. We want to be free to do what we want to do. We want to be free to ride. We want to be free to ride our machines without being hassled by the man.”
So said Peter Fonda in a B-grade motorcycle movie – The Wild Angels. The irony of his little speech is that he represented the leadership. Therefore, he had followers who were “free” to follow him.
Even in freedom – especially in freedom, we seek leaders. As Bob Dylan said in one of his songs “You gotta serve somebody. Well, it might be the Devil, or it might be the Lord. But, you gotta serve somebody.”
Leadership is, of course, a timely, cyclic issue as the United Nations General Assembly met in September and as we go through recent, local and state elections. The leaders of some other countries bewilder me quite a bit. I guess it’s my Jewish blood speaking as I’m disturbed by the idea that someone can get to be the leader of a country and deny an obvious historical event such as the holocaust. Personally, I’m convinced that some of these guys’ speeches should include phrases like “You want fries with that?”
An overwhelming majority of people would acknowledge that I should not have to argue that the Holocaust happened. However, there are some, with evil intent, that would repeat fallacies in hopes of their deceptions eventually taking root.
Such is the case when some people deny the very existence, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here are the facts – God came to Earth as Jesus Christ, died for our sins, and raised Himself from the dead. It happened. It is a documented, well witnessed event in history with evidence that meets court tested requirements.
Some choose to deny that Jesus is LORD based not on the facts but rather on what they want. And then, they choose whom they will serve. We should not be surprised by the actions of some of our own leadership in this country given the representative nature of our government.
In the motorcycle ministries and in most other parts of the body of Christ, I see the entire process inverted. The leaders serve, and all of us as followers of Christ are His/God’s representatives. Jesus has given us the freedom to act on His behalf.
That’s what I want. I want to be free. I want to be free to serve Jesus Christ. I want to be free to serve Jesus Christ without being hassled by the man.
God Speed, Jack
